A Mother’s Day Devotional – MOM
SCRIPTURE:
Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. —Genesis 3:20—
THOUGHT:
WOW! What a responsibility that would be, don’t you think? No pressure, right?
From the start, women have been given the opportunity of being mothers. God intended it that way and we have been doing just that since the human race began. Now, there are all kinds of jokes and memes and other funny stuff out there about what moms need to endure “being a mom”. Yet, I know that none of us would trade the role of motherhood for anything.
First, let’s explore what it means to “be” a mom. We have moms that give birth to their children. All of us have our story of labor and delivery and the most poignant moment of our lives. Let us not forget about stepmoms. That my friends, can sometimes be a thankless and challenging job. Yet, my stepmom was so important to me. Then, there are the moms who adopt children – a very special responsibility and a genuinely loving act of God. In fact, in today’s world, we have moms through IVF and surrogacy! What an amazing way to give a woman a child and for someone else to be a part of that miracle from God. Then, there are the women that are aunts and sisters and cousins and friends of moms. I cannot even imagine what I would have done as a mom without those friends of mine who helped out when I had no idea what to do. As a matter of fact, I cannot think of any woman who is not either a mom, a grandma, stepmom, or someone who helps a mom in some way or another.
We are in this together. In Genesis, God made sure that we knew the vital role that we, as women, would play in the scheme of our own families and in that of mankind. He didn’t stop there though. The Bible has over 300 references to someone’s mom and the important role they played! God must have thought we were an integral and important part of His Plan for His Children.
In this very challenging time of isolation and quarantining, moms are really challenged to not only be a mom – but teachers, coaches, nurses, doctors, and still be bread-winners. For us moms whose children are grown, it is especially hard not to see them as often or when they do come over – to only get a kiss on the head instead of a hug. Or how about those moms who are alone to care for the children because dad is a doctor or other essential worker and unable to be physically with his family. Or vice versa – those moms who cannot be with their family on this special day because they are being moms to others in the hospitals. How about those moms who are serving their country – keeping everyone’s children safe? The list is endless.
In conclusion, I refer to another scripture that I hold dear in my heart:
Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons. —Matthew 27:55-56—
The disciples had fled in fear of retribution, the Roman soldiers were only doing their job, the onlookers were confused and sparse, the government officials were nowhere to be found….. but the MOMS were there. The moms who were grieving yet present, staunch yet tenderly crying, fearful yet brave and they knelt and stood there beneath the shadow of the cross, the cross of our Savior. They would be the ones to stay until his last breath. They were the ones to anoint the body and clothe Him. They were the ones who rose early after the Sabbath and went to the tomb. They were the ones whom God chose to see the Risen Savior!
Thank You God for the role you have given us. We are grateful and humbled.
PRAYER:
Dearest God, we come to you as women and moms. We come to you on our knees thanking you for our daughters and sons and nieces and nephews and for all the children we are privileged to care for in Your Love. We thank you for the opportunity to take care of Your Children. Help us to be the moms that raise spiritual children – going to church when we are tired, reading bedtimes stories with a prayer at the end even when we are exhausted, and teaching the scriptures to their little minds and hearts. Help us to be generous with our time and energy. Help us Dear Lord, to be who you deemed us to be, help us to be the best moms we can be….for YOU.
AMEN
