Waves of Love
Today’s devotional “Waves of Love” asks us to consider how God’s Love is like the waves of the ocean. Allow the waves of God’s Love to break over you to refresh you and to lift you up.
Thought:
Gods’ Love. How does someone describe It? Can it be compared to the waves of an ocean? Moving, strong, changing, shifting, crashing, nurturing, reflective, flowing, ebbing, rippling, breaking, billowing, fierce, and powerful. Colorful words… but still only a feeble, humanistic attempt at utilizing adjectives to define Love that is virtually indescribable. There would be an infinite number of waves and boundless differences between each wave. The waves and Gods’ Love has no beginning and no end. Just when one wave slides deftly back into the ocean, another one teases its’ presence and then boldly crashes upon the shore, only to be drawn back to itself once again. Each wave is unique but still part of the whole, similar in its’ qualities and purpose.
Similarly, Gods’ Love cannot be kept in a box and described in only a few different words. It is also so special that to describe it would require divine and blessed words that mere humans do not seem to possess. We cannot fathom the enormity of all that an ocean is or the uniqueness of each wave and certainly that same lack of knowledge correlates with trying to aptly describe Gods Love.
To be able to comprehend or appreciate His Love though, let us contemplate a few of the possibilities.
Moving. Gods’ Love is constantly going forward…. Strong. There is nothing more powerful than Gods’ Love. Changing. It is amazing that God can “love” us in so many ways, dependent on the need. S h i f t i n g. God does not love one person at a time but loves everyone all the time, fulfilling our needs as they arise. Crashing. Sometimes we feel Gods’ Love like a BURST into our hearts, filling, and overflowing. Nurturing. Although it can be powerful, it can also gently enfold us with a light and delicate touch. Has anyone ever gazed upon a sweet newborn? Reflective. When we receive His Love, we can feel the implications and then try to show that same kind of love to others. Flowing. Gods’ Love does not come in increments but in an ever-moving cycle. Ebbing. God never stops loving us, but certain life situations require stepping back, thinking, and then rediscovering His formidable Love. Rippling. Like a stone thrown into the water, you never know who that Love will affect.
The thesaurus will never be able to contain all the words that are clearly indicative of the Love of our Almighty God.
So, the next time you have the opportunity to be at the beach, take a few moments to sit on the warm sand, gaze upon His Mighty Creation, and use all your senses to experience the waves in the ocean. Sit close to the edge and allow His Love to tenderly touch you, to brush upon your body with a cool refreshment. Watch the rolling and billowing as it builds into an epic roar, like a mighty Lion. Notice that although it seems like the waves will continue up the sandy bank, escaping its’ Creator, instead, they are drawn back to the One Who gave it life. Smell the sweet and salty mist above the waves, tossed about, swirling towards the clouds. Listen to the ominous splash upon the shore and hear the echo of His Voice. Taste the water, clean and clear, upon your lips. Bask in the warmth of the sun yet be anticipatory of the coolness of the wave to rush over you. Feel the waves. Listen to the waves. Touch the waves. Observe the waves. Let Gods’ Love billow over you.
PRAYER:
Help me God to truly appreciate and comprehend Your Love. Help me to appreciate Your Creation of the ocean, especially as it is indicative of Your Comfort. Most of all help me to love others as You have loved me. AMEN.
